Perception of the Palestinians
By Micah Halpern

Saturday January 25, 2020

I've Been Thinking:

The Trump Peace Plan, labeled the Deal of the Century, is back in the news.
The Israelis have been invited to Washington, DC to hear the plan.

The Palestinians have not received an invitation.

Since December of 2017 the Palestinians have been officially boycotting the United States. The last high level discussion between the US and Palestinians took place under the presidency of President Obama. Those talks were conducted with John Kerry, Obama's secretary of state.

To get a good sense of the status of the Palestinians in world diplomatic affairs it is helpful to look at who visits Ramallah and where Palestinian President Abbas goes to visit.

This week 46 world leaders came to Jerusalem to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. There were kings, prime ministers and presidents. Only five leaders went to Ramallah to visit Palestinian President Abbas.

They were: Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron, Australian Governor-General David Hurley and Britain's Prince Charles.
By my count, they are the only world leaders who took the time to make the twenty minute drive from Jerusalem to Ramallah.
