Saudi Internal Tensions

Monday March 8, 2020

I've Been Thinking:

The youngest brother of the Saudi king was arrested by his nephew over the weekend in Saudi Arabia.

He was not the only person arrested - several other members of the royal family were also arrested including a nephew of the king.

Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince, is the son of the King. Since 2017 he has been the de-facto total leader of the kingdom. And since 2017 the Crown Prince has periodically arrested high ranking members of the royal family in an attempt to consolidate power and eliminate challenges to authority.

He has also been clamping down on corruption and kickbacks. It is a system rife with kickbacks - the family controls everything. Corruption is an easy tool to apply against political rivals.
We will watch and see
