Argentina Let Rabbis In
By Micah Halpern

I've Been Thinking:

Coronavirus touches all corners of the world. We tend to focus on where we and our loved ones are located – but there is a whole big world out there and whether we pay attention or not, very often, what happens in other parts of the world has an impact on our lives.

Argentina has closed themselves off from the world. No commercial flights in or out. This has had a huge impact on business.

Argentina is the 5th largest exporter of meat in the world. Israel is their 3rd largest client, buying over $100 million in kosher meat from Argentina per year.

Before Corona, in order to certify that meat as kosher, teams of Israeli rabbis, ritual slaughterers, would travel to Argentina to properly kill the animals according to Jewish law, thereby making them kosher. The rabbis would remain in Argentina for three months to slaughter the cattle and then return home.

Since COVID the rabbis had not been permitted into Argentina.

Until now. This week the government of Argentina said that they will co-sponsor a private jet to bring in the rabbis. They will permit them to prepare the meat for kosher certification.

This will help keep the supply of kosher meat at full capacity – which is good news for Israel. It also means that Argentina will maintain its position in the top 5 of world meat exporters – which is good news for Argentina.
