By Micah Halpern
Wednesday March 31, 2021 Yugoslav’s new foreign minister, Donika Gervalla, gave an interview that made headlines in Israel and around the world. Gervalla had just finished a conversation with Turkish President Erdogan. Erdogan was pressuring the Balkan nation to reconsider their diplomatic opening of relations with Israel and the opening of their embassy in Jerusalem. In her interview with the online news site Kallxo.com she said “I believe that the issue of our embassy in Israel is a done deal. Why is it a done deal? Because we cannot get involved in diplomatic adventures to reconsider an issue that already has ended”. Gervalla said Kosovo wants to strengthen ties with Israel but also wants to have “a good friendship, good ties with Palestinian authorities.” Kosovo established diplomatic ties with Israel on Feb.1st of this year and earlier this month became the first European country and the first Muslim-majority country to establish an embassy in the western part of Jerusalem. The Turkish president is, once again, stirring the pot – but Yugoslavia is not interested.
