Surinam’s foreign minister, Albert Ramdin, was in Jerusalem when he made the announcement in a joint press conference with Israeli foreign minister, Yair Lapid. Several other countries have already moved or have promised to move their embassies to Jerusalem, the Israeli capital. In May, Ecuador opened an Office of Innovation in Jerusalem which is seen as a first step to moving their embassy. Columbia opened an Office of Innovation in November of 2021. Brazil and Honduras have trade offices in Jerusalem. The US opened their embassy in Jerusalem in May of 2018. Guatemala moved their embassy to Jerusalem quickly after the United States made their move. In June of 2021, Honduras opened its embassy in Jerusalem. Kosovo opened its embassy in March 2021. And The Dominican Republic, Malawi, and Equatorial Guinea have announced their intentions to open embassies in Jerusalem. Surinam and Israel established diplomatic relations in 1976.
