Finally, 50 years after the Massacre of 11 Israeli Olympic athletes in Munich, Bavarian authorities say that they are releasing the unpublished files on the attack.  Or almost all the files.  All, “except for some confidential files.”

On September 5, 1992, PLO terrorists who called themselves Black September, broke into the Munich Olympic.  The terrorists murdered 11 Israeli athletes and then they escaped.  

Joachim Herrmann, the top security official in the southern German state, explained that Bavaria will no longer keep any files under wraps, but conceded that federal authorities might still hold confidential files.

The goal of Black September was the release of terrorists held in Israeli prisons and two comrades held in West German jails.

A failed attempt to free the hostages in Munich resulted in the death of all of the Israelis.

There are still so many unanswered questions about this terror attack. Hopefully the newly opened files will shed important light on this tragic episode in Olympic history.
