By Micah Halpern
Iranian authorities have arrested several people in connection with the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards colonel that took place this past May, in Tehran. Iran has blamed Israel and its Western allies for the death. The Guards, Iran's elite security force, said the shooting of Hassan Sayad Khodai by two people on a motorcycle was the work of "terrorist groups affiliated with global oppression and Zionism". Translation, global oppression is Iranian terminology for the West and Zionism is, of course, Israel. Speaking at a news conference an Iranian spokesman said: "Several people have been arrested in the case of the assassination of martyr Khodai. The necessary legal orders have been issued for them and the case is under investigation.” According to Israeli media, Khodai headed a unit of the Quds Force - the Revolutionary Guards' overseas arm – the unit that planned attacks on Israelis abroad. For more background, Iranian forces have been playing a key role in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Tehran's ally, in his war against Islamic State and other militant and rebel groups during Syria's civil war. Khodai's killing coincided with the resumption of Iran’s Nuke Deal talks. And at least six Iranian scientists and academics have been killed or attacked since 2010, some by assailants riding motorcycles, in strikes believed to have targeted Iran's uranium enrichment program, which, according to the West, is being used to develop Iran’s nuclear weapons capability.
