Sunday June 27, 2021 The United States has carried out airstrikes against Iranian supported forces in Iraq and Syria. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the attacks were approved by President Biden who also, he said: “directed further military action to disrupt and deter” attacks on U.S. facilities and personnel in Iraq. According to the official US statement: “We are in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq for the sole purpose of assisting the Iraqi Security Forces in their efforts to defeat ISIS … The United States took necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action designed to limit the risk of escalation - but also to send a clear and unambiguous deterrent message.” The official Iraq military response condemned the United States. The Iraqi condemnation was to be expected. What was not expected was the US strike. Over the last few months Iranian proxies have been aggressively attacking US personnel in the region using drones.
